Electrical Course Programme

Day One Programme

Introductions and the aims of the course

An introduction to the course tutor and the other course delegates.

The aims of the course will be set out.

Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR), and other statutes and codes

The relevant legislation, standards, codes and other references affecting the installation of boat electrical systems.

Can electrical installation best practice be anticipated on boats - what's your experience? The role of best practice throughout this course.

Why the EAWR is a good framework for boat electrical safety and how the BSS requirements align with the framework.

EAWR Reg 16 - Competency and the BSS examiner.

What is electricity?

A brief coverage of the nature of electricity, basic DC circuits, series/parallel batteries, basic AC circuits and voltage, amps, resistance and power, sources of boat AC including multi-source arrangements, effects of electric current including galvanic corrosion. Common AC

The dangers of electricity

The dangers of electricity including::

shock and burn - including the effects on the human body

fire - including reference to potential causes such as incorrect conductor size, inadequate protective devices and mechanical damage

arcing - including reference to potential causes such as loose connections and unintentional short circuits

explosion - including battery explosions and ignition of escaped battery hydrogen gas

other dangers - such as battery electrolyte leakage

Protection against dangers and faults

Protection against overload and short circuit - fuses, circuit breakers RCBOs, etc including recognising the various types

Protection against earth leakage - RCD's, RCBOs, including recognising where RCD protection is or is not necessary.

Day Two Programme

BSS - Part 3 Electrical Systems

Delegates will discuss the application of the BSS checks relevant to series of photographs. The tutor will use this opportunity to refresh and develop on Day 1 material and will draw discussions to a conclusion.

NB delegates are expected to be familiar with the ECPs themselves

Course review

The course tutor will outline the learning points from the last 1½ days and will relate these to the course aim and objectives.

Questions forum

An opportunity for examiners to ask any questions and clarify any aspects of the course.

The assessment

Assessment will be a written assessment will take place after lunch on the second day and will take the form of 30 multiple choice questions.

Feedback to delegates

The course tutor will endeavour to give all delegates feedback on their assessments on the day.

For those who successfully pass the assessment, Certificates will be sent out within 5 working days of the assessment.

What did you think of the course?

Examiners will be invited to complete the course feedback form.

Delegates should remain until cleared to leave by the course tutor.
